Custom Lean-To Carport for Caravan Storage

When these homeowners in Barnsley approached us for a Car Port installation, they already had a clear problem. Actually, several. British weather being the main villain, as usual.

As keen campers with a caravan that needed protecting, they wanted something more than just a basic shelter. Their goal was to create a multi-functional, all-weather space along the side of their modern-build bungalow. Somewhere to safely store their caravan, load and unload without getting drenched and reclaim an much underused part of their property.

Understanding the Brief

We started, as we always do, by meeting the owners on-site. Not revolutionary, but surprisingly rare in this industry nowadays...

The space itself was long but - as the pictures show - horribly exposed. Previously, it was little more than a concrete run-off area and some extra parking space

The key requirements were:

  • Full protection for a caravan

  • Comfortable loading/unloading in all weather

  • Additional storage space for garden furniture

  • A design that complements a modern bungalow

  • Maximum use of an otherwise wasted side passage

  • Design & Material Selection

This wasn’t a “grab something off the shelf and hope for the best” situation.

Due to the length, access constraints, and proximity to neighbouring boundaries, the project required a fully bespoke approach. So, after discussing the available options, we settled on a custom made lean-to style aluminium structure with polycarbonate roofing.

Why this combination?

We actually love these one-off jobs, where we get to use the knowledge and experience built up over many years of service.

So, why did we choose the combination:

Aluminium frame: Durable, low maintenance, and structurally ideal for long spans

Polycarbonate roof panels: Light-diffusing, weather-resistant, and far more forgiving than glass

Anthracite finish: Keeps things modern instead of looking like a 1998 conservatory mistake

We ultimately designed and manufactured a custom 8m x 3m carport, tailored specifically to the property’s layout.

The Build: Not Your Average Install

This was one of those projects that looks straightforward… until you actually start building it.

Challenges included:

  • Precise integration with the bungalow structure

  • Working within tight access along the side of the property

  • Ensuring proper drainage and roof pitch over a long span

  • Aligning posts without compromising usable width

Everything had to be measured to perfection, cut on site and installed with absolute precision. No room for “that’ll do”.

The result, we think, is a clean, structurally solid installation that feels like it was always part of the property, rather than something bolted on as an afterthought.

The Outcome

The finished Car Port installation transformed what was once a neglected side space into a highly functional asset.

The owners now have:

  • A fully protected caravan storage area

  • A dry, usable loading zone regardless of weather

  • Additional covered storage space for outdoor items

  • A visually cohesive structure that enhances the property

And most importantly, the owners were delighted with the result. Take a look at the pics below and get inspired.

Car Port Installation in Barnsley & Accross Yorkshire

As experienced awning, veranda and car port installers, with many years experience building for the weather in this part of the world, we speak with a lot of homeowners in the region, considering a car port for their property.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:

Do I need planning permission for a car port?

In most cases, no. Car ports fall under permitted development, but this depends on size, height, and location. Always worth checking before committing.

What’s the best material for a car port?

Aluminium is typically the best choice. It’s durable, low maintenance, and ideal for modern properties.

Is polycarbonate roofing strong enough?

Yes. High-quality polycarbonate is impact-resistant, weatherproof, and designed for UK conditions.

How long does installation take?

Most installations take a few days, but custom builds like this can take longer depending on complexity.

Can a car port be used for storage as well?

Absolutely. Many clients use them for bikes, furniture, tools, and general outdoor storage.

How much does a car port installation cost?

Costs vary based on size, materials, and design. Custom installations will always be priced accordingly.
